Scholarships

Continuing ABS students:  The scholarship application website is now available to submit applications for the 2009-10 academic year.  Students should log into http://mystateonline.sdstate.edu, click on the Financial tab, and then on the scholarship application link.  This online application will be used for most college-level and department-level scholarships for ABS students.  Both students who are and are not eligible for the Jackrabbit Guarantee program should submit this application to be eligible for scholarships next school year.  The deadline for the general online scholarship application is February 6, 2009.  Recipients will be notified later this spring.  Recipients and donors will be recognized at an event to be held in the Fall semester.

Incoming students should complete the SDSU freshman scholarship application the year prior to your enrollment. Completing this one application makes students eligible for scholarships at the university, college and departmental levels.  The freshman scholarship application form can be found by at this website (click here).

Special Scholarships: 

Some scholarships/awards require additional information from applicants to satisfy criteria established by the donors. If you believe you are qualified and wish to be considered an applicant for any of the scholarships or awards described below, please contact the appropriate department for instructions on how to apply.

Duane and Shirley Acker International Fellowship.  This award provides financial support to a student participating in an international experience such as study abroad, international work experience or internship.  Contact Ag/Bio Academic Programs Office, 156 Ag Hall, 688-5133.

SD Chapter of Farm Managers and Rural AppraisersScholarship.  Preference will be given to students with career interest in rural real estate appraisal and/or farm/ranch management and who have taken one or more of the following classes: AGEC/PS 473 Rural Real Estate Appraisal, AGEC 271-271L Farm & Ranch Management, and RANG 215 Introduction to Integrated Ranch Management.  The scholarship application form and instructions can be obtained at the SD-AFMRA website www.asfmra-sd.com under the SDSU Scholarship link. 

Native American Scholarships. A grant from the United States Department of Agriculture's Multicultural Scholars Program offers a limited number renewable scholarships to American Indian students who are enrolled members of federally recognized tribes.  For more information, contact Tim Nichols, Ag-Bio Academic Programs Office, AgHall Box 2207, 688-5133.

Farm Credit Services of America.  This $2000-scholarship requires a special application form and a 1-2 page essay explaining your career plans. Preference is given to college juniors or seniors who are residents of Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, or Wyoming.  Contact Ag/Bio Academic Programs Office, 156 Ag Hall, 688-5133.

Billie Sutton Memorial Scholarship.  Successful applicant must be a resident of South Dakota and preferably a sophomore or junior during the next school year. Preference may be given to a student who has been active in the SDSU Young Democrats organization and/or has been active in the Democratic party. Preference may be given to a student with a strong record of academic achievement and leadership activities. Contact the Animal & Range Sciences Department, 688-5165.

Ron R. Reed Memorial Scholarship.  Recipient must be a Business Economics Major with a minimum 3.2 grade point average and have completed their junior year.  Applicants must include an essay on addressing economic development and overall enhancement of the State of South Dakota.  A resume highlighting the applicants college and community activities is also required.  Contact the Economics Department, Scobey Hall, 688-4141.

Max and Ruth Myers Award in International Rural Economics.  The application for this award can be any of the following: (1) Preparation and submission of a proposal and request to attend an international conference, or workshop, or symposium relevant to some aspect of international rural economics, to be held in the U.S. or elsewhere.  This is to be followed by attendance at such meeting and preparation of a written report to be delivered to the Economics Department. (2) Preparation and submission of a proposal and plan to conduct an individual study outside of the U.S. and its possessions on a topic or problem within the subject of international rural economics.  This is to be followed by conduct of the study and preparation and submission of a written report.  It may be possible to conduct such a study while in another country for other reasons. (3) Preparation and submission of an original, unpublished, non-thesis paper on a topic within the general field of international rural economics. Frank Puhr Memorial Award.  Applicants for this award must submit an original, non-thesis paper of not less than 15 pages dealing with agricultural finance or a related topic. Contact the Economics Department, Scobey Hall, 688-4141.

Sheridan Wikle Scholarship for South Dakota Students with Disabilities. Recipient must be a South Dakota resident. Preference will be given to a student with a physical and/or orthopedic impairment.
